BSS1: Paying Attention to the Heart

A Beautiful Soul Series: One

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Assalaamu alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barkaatuh.

Allaahumma sualli 'alaa sayyidinaa Muhammad wa 'alaa aalihii wa ashaabihi wa sallam.

Allah, glorified be He above all that He is associated with, gives us a stern warning saying;

 THE WARNING:

''And spend in the way of Allah from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."''

THE REASON:

''But never will Allah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.''

(Surat Al-Munaafiquun, the Hypocrites, Chapter 63 ayah 10 and 11)

He, the Mighty and the Majestic, says in ayah 9 of this same Surah that;

'O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers.'

Among our major provisions that Allah azza wa jal cautions us to spend in His way are; 'Wealth and Children.' Our wealth and children and all other provisions that Allah azza wa jal blesses us with must be used for only one thing; 'Spent in His cause.'

Spending in His cause also leads to one thing; 'His Remembrance,' 'Being Conscious of Him,' 'Taqwa.'

OUR PROVISIONS:

The aayaat (verses) above are among the aayaat that keep ringing in my head quite often. It keeps nudging at me and telling me;

'Rubaba, you have to be wise and not die wishing you had lived a better life.’

But funny enough, I had always seen the 'rizq' that Allah azza wa jal talked about in ayah 10 in money terms even though I knew how vast the subject of 'rizq' was. Perhaps, that is due to the English translation. Once I heard someone say;

 We should not mistaken the 'rizq' 'provision' that Allah azza wa jal talks about to mean 'money' because it goes beyond that.

So in shaa Allah, 'rizq' is going to be one of the things I will write about in this Beautiful Soul Series (BSS).

PAYING ATTENTION TO THE HEART

In a popular hadith, the Prophet Muhammad suallallaahu alayhi wa sallam tells us that;

 '…Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body, if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets damaged the whole body gets damaged and that is the heart.’

We realize in this powerful saying that life and living is all about the heart. Spiritually, a sick heart dulls the spirit (the soul) and physically, a sick heart dulls the body. It becomes therefore incumbent upon us to give maximum attention to the state of our hearts at all times.

The state of our hearts is what determines our level of contentment or discontentment. It determines the manner of our relationships with others. It determines how we relate to our Creator, Al-Khaaliq.

For a Muslim, it is complete wisdom to give utmost priority to the heart because it is that with which he or she communicates with Allah, the Lord of the Heavens. He sees right through our hearts where we conceal most things from other humans.

In order for you to become the kind of beautiful soul that this series will be talking about, you need to do just one thing;

'Concentrate your energy on the protection and maintenance of your heart.’

We will talk about what this entails and how it could be done later. Allah, the Lord of the Universe, describes the Day of Mutual Gain and Loss to us as follows;

'The Day when there will not benefit anyone wealth or children. But only one who comes to Allah with (Qalbin Saleem) 'a sound heart'.”

(Surat Ash-Shu'ara, the Poets, Chapter 26 ayah 88 and 89)

At the end of our stay in this Dunya (world), we only go back to Allah azza wa jal with our hearts and it is not every heart that is going to be beneficial for us whiles with Him but the 'qalbin saleem' 'sound heart.'

So, let us get working on our hearts, to make it sound, to make it beautiful…for His sake solely...Kindly follow this series fiisabilillaah. Jazaakumullaahu khair always!
